SABA May 2015 class - a little bit of insight...
There is a lot of talk that goes on in these forums and to be honest it's probably from those who don't do all that well, fail out, and have nothing better to do. I am currently in the May 2015 class and have exams coming up Monday, and as procrastination sets in I remembered all the scary things I was reading in these forums when I was looking to apply. I was always looking for facts and statistics rather than just subjective opinions from whoever so hear are my facts. I finished Brock University (in Ontario, Canada) with an 85% average in Medical Sciences. In the first month there are two courses: clinical skills and scientific foundations. Science exam was 92% and Clinical Skills exam was 84%, note was 100% and interview was 94%. Granted the first month is usually the easiest and I have anatomy and histology coming up which are going to be far from simple, but that is the basic idea. Now if you think studying will be the same as undergrad you are mistaken. Your life will pretty much become studying, every day all day, and to be honest that is okay with me. Obviously you can take a break every now and then but time management is key! Saba University is a second chance for most and if you think they are going to offer acceptance to someone with a low GPA and just let you coast through medical school what kind of reputation would that give them and really what kind of patient would want you working on them. If your concerned about getting accepted your best chance is in the January class or May class. The interview is a really simple phone call and they are super friendly so no worries there. Best advice I can give if you have been accepted... join a facebook group as soon as possible and talk to people who already live here. Good luck!

Questions on What Materials I Should Bring to Saba
I'm accepted for the September semester and I want to buy things I might need during my time on the island as it relates to academic work. In other words, any advice on study aids, review books, etc?
And are the textbooks necessary or can I rely on lectures/slides? And is there any tools I should buy for anatomy, etc.? Something you'd advise that the school doesn't say? I know about the dissection kit - don't know if I need a particular brand or anything, and I know about the two sets of scrubs. But I'm wondering if there are any other items? I ask because I'm likely not going to leave the island during breaks and it would be far more convenient for me to buy them in advance.
Thanks so much for any input!

Accepted to Ross and Saba, MERP'ed at AUC, Placed in Foundations at SGU- Please help!
AUC and SGU were my top choices, now I'm extremely frustrated and baffled trying to decide what I should do. As if not getting into a U.S. medical school wasn't hard enough.
My MCAT and GPA are average. I did a non-science master's degree after graduating, and really want to keep the ball rolling and start medical school. My extracurriculars and experiences are excellent. I do well in supportive environments, and that doesn't seem to be the case with Ross and Saba where they don't have a problem dropping you. I am worried that being placed in MERP and Foundations by AUC and SGU means I really need the extra semester, on the other it's hard to justify it when I have been accepted to other schools.
What concerns me most about Ross and Saba are their attrition rates. I know SGU offers a variety of programs to help students succeed, do Ross and Saba have similar services? Another concern of mine is clinical rotations. I want to settle down in NY and rotate at hospitals there during my 3rd and 4th year, but it seems like you really have to fight for your desired rotations at Ross and Saba. My third concern regarding Saba is the size of the island and lack of amenities. I don't want to go insane.
I would appreciate insight from those attending any of these school, especially Ross and Saba. Also, do you think I should start right away or spend a semester preparing myself?
Thank you for your help!

murder June 2015 of student
I wanted to find out what the situation was like at SABA regarding the murder of a student in May 2015. A suspect has been detained (a SABA student) for murdering the other student, but I wanted to find out why the school has declined to comment on this. How are the students doing and what have they been told? There was an article I read that said that many females had received threats and harassment emails from an anonymous person and mentions of a stabbing, but the school did not seem to do much about these threats. Is this true? I just don't understand why the school would try to sweep this under the rug or why they did not do anything significant about those threats? This concerns me about the safety of the school. What is the general tone on campus nowdays? Has the school offerend any support or grief counselors? This is such a serious event, and I feel extremely sorry for the girl who was murdered. I also hope that something like this isn't just swept under the rug though so that prospective students don't really know about what happened. People should make informed decisions before going off to a foreign place.

Saba Medical School & Residency
Hi everyone. I know this has been talked about A LOT but I think it is time to get more recent responses. I have been accepted to Saba School of Medicine, and I would like to hear from any type of student who is currently at Saba, graduated, in residency or currently practicing. I would also like to get some input from those who either did not get a residency - did you have a red flag in your application (ie. low USMLE, poor LOR, etc.), or those who did not graduate - is it REALLY that stressful, or did you just not put in as much studying time as you think you should have?
I understand that it is very difficult to graduate from the school, and that getting a residency spot is difficult as well. But for those who get decent step 1 score, pass their courses, good LOR, etc. do they get matched? I am Canadian, and I realize that there is a very slim chance that I will come back to practice in Canada, and I am fine with that. I would be more than happy to get a residency spot in the US. Is it more difficult for a nonUS-IMG to get a US residency?
Last question - how reflective did you find the MCAT of your performance in medical school and on the USMLE exams? My MCAT scores were in the low 20s (cGPA=3.5 science GPA=3.7) , and I am worried about my performance on the board exams, however I do not think that I fully studied as I should have, and I think that since the school's program is aimed to prepare you for the step 1 exam, I should be just fine.
Any input on these points or your opinions would be appreciated!

Dismissed US DO Program
I have previously attended medical school at Des Moines University for a year before being academically dismissed. I had a 2.0 gpa or 70 percent on all required course work. I took the mcat in 2009 with a 29O as my score. Would you think that I am still eligible to apply to Saba University School of Medicine and have a decent shot at acceptance? Would I have to retake the mcat since it is from 2009?

Canada and SON - Act now or issues with future residency placement in USA
So this is a very bad news to Canadians.
There have been significant new changes for who and who can't get a SON.
Are you Canadian in an Internal Medicine residency on a J1 based on a SON from Canada? Well you can't subspecialize now in any specialty starting 2017.
NEW: 2016 is the last year the following will be supported under category B. As of 2017, physicians undertaking the training below must apply under category C.
* additional training after meeting RCPSC Specialty Training Requirements
* an ACGME-accredited sub-specialty program
Category C:
Physician specialist licenced in Canada who wishes to pursue postgraduate training in the United States.
This category comprises physicians who possess a current full medical licence ("Canadian Standard") and who are currently practising in a medical specialty or subspecialty or family medicine in a Canadian province or territory. These physicians are certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Collège des Médecins du Québec or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Textbooks- First Semester
For those who actually enrolled in the new curriculum started in 2015, which textbooks off of the textbook list were actually needed for class? Were the "Mark's basic medical biochemistry", "Thompson & Thompson genetics in medicine", "skills for communicating with patients", and "color atlas and text of Histology" actually used and needed? Thanks!

Applying to saba and was dismissed from Ross
I have a weird application. About 10 years ago I was at Ross and did fine in the 1st semester but had issues in my second semester and did poorly. i did bad due to depression and Ross told me to take a semester off and then come back. I never came back and then was dismissed. Within the past 5 years I have become interested in doing medicine again. I had a poor gpa originally to go to Ross but since have gone to a state college to retake premed and did much better. I had a 30 on the mcat when I took it in 2002 and I took it in 2014 and received a 30 again. Since Ross I have just been working. Will Saba be open to taking me with what happened at Ross. Any advice would be great.

Saba Application on Hold
Hi,
I received a letter from the admissions department regarding my application. It states the following:
The Admissions Committee recently completed a preliminary review of your application, and based upon this evaluation we believe in order to give you fair consideration we must place your file on hold until we receive your final grades from California State University, Long Beach.
I look forward to receiving your updated transcript and thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
I'm not graduating until next semester. Can someone please respond if they went through the same thing.
Thanks much.

Looking for basic science prep advice
I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on what I can study for the most recent curriculum prior to attending Saba next year. It's been a while since I've taken sciences, and I'm wanting to get back into the routine and refresh my memory. I've got Guyton's medical physiology that I'm going through, and I'm watching Dr. Najeebs lectures thus far. I don't have a background in cell bio or genetics, and I see that's a large portion of semester 1, but I have done basic and advanced biochem. Advice is appreciated!
