FASTFORWARD TO 2015 - questions, questions

$

Hello Everyone,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Three major questions:

1. I have read bits and pieces of what the new curriculum will be like, but have not yet found a comprehensive description of what this new curriculum is. I have searched the school webby and have printed out the new course descriptions and syllabus but nothing as sufficient. Could someone (maybe the Jan 2015 starters???) shed more light on what this new curriculum is and how it defers from the one used before 2015?

2. I read somewhere that the textbook requirements will not be greatly affected by the new curriculum. Having this in mind, lots of people on this site swear by BRS for anatomy and Netlers ATLAS. This came from posts from the years prior (2010, 2011, 2012). Now in 2014/2015 era, which books have you recent Sabans found useful to succeed in various courses? That is, which ones have you found to be absolutely essential/a-must-have? Are these books available digitally in the school?

3. Are there any recent developments or things 2015 incoming students should know? School, Class, Lab, Island, Weather, e.t.c.???

Thank you for your response.

I am exploring SABA for daughter. What is the current GPA/MCAT requirements for admission to SABA? Are SABA students eligible for US Federal Student Loans and Financial AID?

When is the time to apply to have a competitive standing?

Hi everyone!

I'm very new to this forum so I'm sorry if this question has been asked 10 times over but I haven't seen it pop up anywhere yet.

My question is pretty self-explanatory from the title. Ideally, when should I apply to SABA in order to be a competitive candidate for the September 2015 or January 2016 class? When is the absolute latest date that I can submit an application and still be considered (for both Sept., and Jan. separately)?

Currently, I'm thinking of submitting my application mid to late March for the September 2015 class. Is this a good idea or should I just wait for January 2016? The reason for my submission date is giving my references a month to write the LORs.

I'm from Canada where the application system is completely different so this rolling submission concept really confuses me! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :) Cheers.

I have a question on rejection

Hey guys,

Submitted my application a few weeks ago while I waited for one last letter of recommendation to be sent. I talked to Saba admissions to make sure there was nothing else I needed to do (about 1 week ago), and they reported they just needed that letter. No worries, it'll be sent soon.

Fast forward to yesterday, I received an email stating I was rejected. However, I learned today that that letter I waited on hadn't even been sent yet. Yikes!

That can't be the reason for rejection, right?
I'll talk to admission on Monday and make sure that wasn't the case.

SABA vs Ross

I was recently accepted to both SABA and Ross MERP. The only thing making me want to go to SABA and not Ross is the fact that it is a lot cheaper. What do you guys think about SABA vs Ross?

Hi guys,

Just looking to hear what other people's opinions are about my situation. I was recently accepted to Saba's May 2015 semester and I've also been MERP'ed by AUC. What would be the pros/cons of each and which option would y'all choose to pursue?

Thanks in advance!

Clinicals at Saba

I'm a 2012 grad from Saba. I have a couple friends interested in going to Saba, so I'd like to know what the current situation is like for clinicals. Are people getting placed into cores quickly? And what cores are available these days? I know when I left there were concerns about there being positions left for people at St. Luke's, do we still have surgery IM and OB cores there? I wouldn't want to recommend Saba if all we had for cores were the essentially scam rotations at places like Wyckoff. Also I never rotated there but heard the Houma and Baltimore sites were also higher quality. Do they still have those? And have there been any new additions which are decent?

I understand potential students come this forum. I'm posting as the father of a future student.

It is very sad that one of the students died recently. If you are a female student, please check
and ensure safety aspect before attending the school.

I'm unable to post any links since I am new to this forum. Please search internet with
'crime in saba' with google, you'll find the information I'm talking about.

I'm posting this message to raise awareness. Please do the right thing for yourself.
I am extremely sad that an young life [known to us through family circles] was lost,
likely due to crime.

Benefits of Saba over SGU

Hello!
I know that I may get some biased reviews here (which I am totally ok with), but I was recently accepted to SGU and am pending my acceptance from Saba (I have an interview next week). I just can't seem to find any recent information on the curriculum, reviews of student life, etc. Saba was my first choice for a number of reasons (cost of living, the rather impressive Match list, living on a tiny island far from distractions), but SGU boasts the name recognition and, supposedly, a lower attrition rate. I have been trying to justify both schools in my mind, and I am honestly torn. For anyone that was in a similar situation, could you please enlighten me as to how you arrived at the decision to attend Saba?
Thank you for your time!

SABA May 2015 class - a little bit of insight...

There is a lot of talk that goes on in these forums and to be honest it's probably from those who don't do all that well, fail out, and have nothing better to do. I am currently in the May 2015 class and have exams coming up Monday, and as procrastination sets in I remembered all the scary things I was reading in these forums when I was looking to apply. I was always looking for facts and statistics rather than just subjective opinions from whoever so hear are my facts. I finished Brock University (in Ontario, Canada) with an 85% average in Medical Sciences. In the first month there are two courses: clinical skills and scientific foundations. Science exam was 92% and Clinical Skills exam was 84%, note was 100% and interview was 94%. Granted the first month is usually the easiest and I have anatomy and histology coming up which are going to be far from simple, but that is the basic idea. Now if you think studying will be the same as undergrad you are mistaken. Your life will pretty much become studying, every day all day, and to be honest that is okay with me. Obviously you can take a break every now and then but time management is key! Saba University is a second chance for most and if you think they are going to offer acceptance to someone with a low GPA and just let you coast through medical school what kind of reputation would that give them and really what kind of patient would want you working on them. If your concerned about getting accepted your best chance is in the January class or May class. The interview is a really simple phone call and they are super friendly so no worries there. Best advice I can give if you have been accepted... join a facebook group as soon as possible and talk to people who already live here. Good luck!

Questions on What Materials I Should Bring to Saba

I'm accepted for the September semester and I want to buy things I might need during my time on the island as it relates to academic work. In other words, any advice on study aids, review books, etc?

And are the textbooks necessary or can I rely on lectures/slides? And is there any tools I should buy for anatomy, etc.? Something you'd advise that the school doesn't say? I know about the dissection kit - don't know if I need a particular brand or anything, and I know about the two sets of scrubs. But I'm wondering if there are any other items? I ask because I'm likely not going to leave the island during breaks and it would be far more convenient for me to buy them in advance.

Thanks so much for any input!

Accepted to Ross and Saba, MERP'ed at AUC, Placed in Foundations at SGU- Please help!

AUC and SGU were my top choices, now I'm extremely frustrated and baffled trying to decide what I should do. As if not getting into a U.S. medical school wasn't hard enough.

My MCAT and GPA are average. I did a non-science master's degree after graduating, and really want to keep the ball rolling and start medical school. My extracurriculars and experiences are excellent. I do well in supportive environments, and that doesn't seem to be the case with Ross and Saba where they don't have a problem dropping you. I am worried that being placed in MERP and Foundations by AUC and SGU means I really need the extra semester, on the other it's hard to justify it when I have been accepted to other schools.

What concerns me most about Ross and Saba are their attrition rates. I know SGU offers a variety of programs to help students succeed, do Ross and Saba have similar services? Another concern of mine is clinical rotations. I want to settle down in NY and rotate at hospitals there during my 3rd and 4th year, but it seems like you really have to fight for your desired rotations at Ross and Saba. My third concern regarding Saba is the size of the island and lack of amenities. I don't want to go insane.

I would appreciate insight from those attending any of these school, especially Ross and Saba. Also, do you think I should start right away or spend a semester preparing myself?

Thank you for your help!
